The 2007 HOTY competition season has started. The final HB competition to be included will be the 2007 NYS Fair HB competition. Winners will be announced each year at the New York State Fair in conjunction with the Fair's homebrew award ceremony.

The results for the NYS Homebrewer of the Year award are calculated from the results of member competitions. The formula used remains consistent for a season, any changes take effect the following season. The results are calculated using the number of entries in a category and your place in that category. This weights the score according to a difficulty level. It is more difficult to place in a large category than a small one. Likewise the Best of Show winners are scored on the total number of entries in the competition. BOS is adjusted so that it is significant but not disproportional to the regular categories.

If individual categories are collapsed to include more than one style, the combined styles are treated as one and awarded the same point values.

We rely on the competitions to report the results to NYSHOTY with the required information. It is important that each brewer check the individual competitions results for accuracy. It is also important to check the posted NYSHOTY results. Please check your results within two weeks of the posting to report any discrepancies. You can sign up for notifications using the form on the left side of the site.

For each entrant, these weighted points will be added up through the year-long competition.

When does the HOTY competition start and end?

The NYS HOTY schedule will be based on the NYS Fair Homebrew Competition, with each year's winner being announced at the Fair with the awarding of the prize.

What happens during that time?

During that period, the HOTY organizers will list on the website all of the participating competitions, entry dates, judging dates, and after each competition is over the results will be posted. Brewers will be matched up with their wins and the scores tallied and posted as the HOTY race unfolds. We will then work with the NYS Fair homebrew competition organizers to get their results tallied into the totals before their awards ceremony, and the HOTY award will be announced at the Fair's award ceremony along with their winners.

How do I get my club's competition included in the NYS HOTY?

  • If your club wants to include its competition, let us know.
  • After your competition is has been officially included in the HOTY schedule you just have the competition and send us the results.
  • That's it! It couldn't be any easier on your end!

What information do you need from us with our competition results?

  • We'll just need the basic results for 1st, 2nd, 3rd in each category and BOS
  • First and last names of winners
  • List of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each category along with the number of entries in each category
  • Hometown of winners (to verify NYS residence)
  • Total number of entries in competitions

So what are the "HOTY" formulas?
These are formulas for use in an MS Excel 2003 spreadsheet. This year the scores are rounded to 3 significant digits. Why? Well the HOTY coordinators are an engineer and an info tech guy.

  • For each collapsed category: =ROUND(Number of Entries In Category *(1*(4-Place in category)/6),3)
  • For each Best of Show category: = ROUND(Total Number Of Entries in competition *(0.1*(4-BOS Place)/6),3)

What types of competitions will be used to determine the NYS HOTY?

  • AHA or BJCP sanctioned events
  • Open to the public
